The spirit of the canal is a tribute to the species and the spaces. Here it is represented with a restful, very understated palette that projects a fragile calm and invites the viewer to wander through the piece. Soft, dark tones speak of the aquatic depths in apparent tranquility where this species, endemic to the Valley of Mexico and critically endangered, lives. This very Mexican type of salamander is part of our culture, to the point that it is the emblem and mascot of the Autonomous University of Mexico City (UACM), where it has been given the name Chikauak, a Nahuatl term that means “strong.” This print is a tribute to Xochimilco, the natural habitat of our axolotl and a place we don’t value enough, as we take for granted that it is protected from human actions. In an era saturated with unwanted colors, it is time to value and learn to care for the environment. Xochimilco is an environment we need to pay attention to, because it requires everyone’s care. Long live Xochimilco and its axolotls!
